  16. 1961 to 1966 and noted East Asia scholar; in La Jolla, Calif.
  17. Born in Tokyo to missionary parents, Reischauer was a professor
  18. of Far Eastern languages at Harvard University and the author
  19. of a number of influential books on the relationships among the
  20. U.S., Japan and China when he was called to the diplomatic
  21. corps by President John F. Kennedy.
